Fashion Forward: Looking at Fall 2011 Trends, Through Looklet!

 Hi guys!
Where I work at a clothing store, I often get to see trendy items going into the new clothing season, and fall is the time of the year for new trends to submerge or old ones to stand strong. I put together a few looks on looklet which I discussed in a previous post. If you don't know what I'm talking about, heres the post!

Made by me.
The first look I made here features a few big trends going into the fall. High-waisted shorts, skirts, pants and jeans are still "in". This trend is great, as high-waisted pants are very comfortable, and you don't have to worry yourself over your pants falling down, or your underwear showing. Long necklaces also still stand very strong going into the fall. This trend has stayed very strong over the past few years. It seems long necklaces are here to stay for a while. Vests, blouses, and other formal attire are making their way into the casual stream. These things are very chic. They say professional without wearing a full suit. As with every fall, boots are making a come back. Usually we start seeing short boots by mid-summer, and by the fall, people are knee-high boots to prepare for the winter. Over-the-shoulder purses with longer straps are pretty trendy right now. They're very convenient for a day or night on the town, because you can flick it around your torso and not have to worry about it falling down your arm. Ray Bans, and wayfarer type glasses are still super trendy, and I believe will be for quite some time. I have the sunglasses wayfarer Ray Bans sported here, but clear-lens glasses are also very popular at the time.
When I look at this look, it screams comfy, but edge to me, and that's why I decided to give the model a dog and put her in the middle of the park. This look is something you can take anywhere, as the tucked-in top and the high-waisted pants make wardrobe malfunctions the least of your worries, and the purse is just so easy to carry along without it being a hassle.

Made by me.
This look has one main selling point for me, the boyfriend blazer. These things are coming in strong, and if you really like following trends, I suggest you pick one up. These things are a bit more of a loose fit than your typical female blazer, but still fit the body nicely. I picked one up last fall, and I never wore it til this summer, but I've gotten tons of compliments. These things are good for any body type. I have a super short torso, and I can pull them off, and I've seen girls who have long torsos and shorter legs, and it fits them well too. It doesn't matter your bodies shape, it flows over without a hitch. A few other things to point out are that the oh-so popular sequins from last fall are coming back. They're cute and flashy, but can be played down, like in the picture above, with a strong necklace and a blazer. Don't be afraid to wear jeans with your boyfriend blazer and sequin shirts. If you find jeans that fit properly, with only one-color wash, they'll look super classy with your already classy look. Pair it up with heels and an over sized bag, and you have yourself a very chic and stylish look, which is very good for both day and night.

The Basic Smokey Eye
This is my own version, I'm not really using traditional smokey eye colors.
Everybody does smokey eye differently, so I'm going to teach you guys my own way that I do smokey eye. For my version, you'll need 3 colors. Most commonly, you'll use a light color, a medium color, and a dark color in the same color family. In my case, I used white as my lightest, pink as my middle, and black as the darkest. So, once you've chosen your colors, read on.
The first step is to put down a good base. For my last Makeup Monday I did a complete breakdown of the importance of putting bases under your colors, so please go read that if you want your makeup to stay. I always use a concealer, then a cream shadow. So once you've put down a base, you're going to start with your lightest coat. Apply this all over your lid, up to the crease your eye makes when its opened. I often use a brush with a lot of bristles for this base color, as it applies the color thick and evenly across the lid. With a lighter brush with no shadow on it, blend out the harsh line across your crease so it gently fades into your skins natural color.
With either the same brush you used for your base color, or one that's a bit smaller, take your second color, the middle shade, and you're going to dab it on the corner of your eyelid (on the top, not the bottom). Once all the eyeshadow is applied in the corner, take the brush and blend it about 2/3 of the way across the lid, into the first color. With the brush you used to blend out harsh lines with the first color, blend a little bit of color up past your eyelid, and extend it out a bit  towards your hairline.
With a very soft, small brush, collect some of your 3rd and darkest color. You're going to start off this color the same as the 2nd color. Dab all the color on your brush into the outer corner of your eye. With that same brush, drag the color up into your creaseline, and down across your upper lashline as if its a sideways V. With the blending brush, blend that color up and out.
With your blending brush, take a small amount of your lightest color and highlight your brow bone. Just take the brush and sweep it under your brow and blend it into the darkest color a little to help blend out the color.
With your darkest color and a very small brush (preferably angled brush), and line your bottom lash line as close to your lashes as you can possibly go. With a little bit of makeup remover, swipe your cheek with a cotton ball to remove any fall out from your eyeshadows.
Then, you simply apply your eyeliner/mascara the way you normally do, and there you have it!

Featured Site: Modcloth

Though Modcloth.com may be a bit more expensive than your average clothing store, the quality of the clothing it sells is unmatched, and the vintage appeal is a breath of fresh air for vintage-lovers like myself. There are so many great things about this website, I don't know where to begin. It features clothing, accessories, home decor, and an absolutely stunning selection of footwear. Let me point out the best perks of this website.
Bathing Beauty One Piece in Velvet- $89.99
The Reviews
If you are unsure of a quality, the fit, or how an item generally looks in person, modcloth has a review system that when you people receive their items they can give it a rating out of 5 stars, how the fit of the item runs, and how the quality of the material is. They can also write a personal review outlining the pros and cons about the piece they received. It is a fantastic way to make up your own mind about buying a product. The item I posted above is one of the many bathing suits in this style, but my personal favorite. It got 5 stars, along with all of the other bathing suits like it, and they all come in plus sizes aswell.

Vintage Stem of Approval (circa 1970s) $49.99 [SOLD]
Actual Vintage Items
Modcloth has a section of their website that sells actual vintage items that are in excellent condition. They range in the era they were from, and in price. When looking for vintage items on this site, you have to be very fast in grabbing them, because there's only ever one in stock and they are usually sold within a few minutes.

Cute Fashion, $10 and Under

There's a lot of cheap items out there, its just a matter of finding them. When clothes shopping, try looking at sales racks before anything else, you may find what you want there. Often times, at least in my experience, there can be similar items on the sales racks and in the new arrivals, for completely different prices. When bargain shopping, you may want to check out thrift stores or only go shopping when you know big sales are on. For online shopping, often times if you spend a certain amount of money at an online store, the shipping is deducted or eventually becomes free.
Anyways, here are some good deals going on around the internet.
Girlprops is an accessory website that always has great deals on beautiful necklaces, bracelets, hair accessories, etc. This site is often featured in magazines, that's how I came across it, actually. Most of the accessories on this site are less than $10 American.
Feather Earrings, $3.99

Lolita Heart Shaped Glasses $9.99
Forever 21 is another store that has plenty of essential items for cheap prices, and they often have great sales. Here are some items that they often have in stock that are less than $10.

Very Late Makeup Monday. I know, its Wednesday.

Considering that Makeup Mondays is the only real series I have running in my blog right now, I don't want to abandon it, and I've been super busy the past few days so I'm going to do a very late segment of Makeup Mondays.
Today, I want to talk about how to get your makeup to stay on. Sure, you can buy the long-lasting things, but do they really last as long as you wish? Sometimes, maybe not. With eyeshadows and liners, its really easy to have them clump up in your crease, blushes just fade after a while, and lipsticks are just extremely stubborn and can be very hard to keep on. Theres a fairly simple solution to all these problems, and it isn't an expensive one. Chances are, if you wear makeup a lot, you already have your quick fix, you just don't know it.

Eyes

Eyeshadow often clumps up in the crease after wearing it all day, so whats the easy way to get eyeshadows to stay in place? Give it a base. Bases can be really simple. Personally, before I put on eyeshadow, I put liquid foundation underneath my eyeshadows, and then I put a creamy eyeshadow on over that. Creamy eyeshadows do not often stay in place very well, but they help brighten up your powder shadow when you put it on over the cream. Revlon has a great line of creamy shadows. So, after you apply your liquid foundation and cream shadow (optional), put any regular powdered shadow over it and it should have no problem staying on as long as you keep your fingers away from your eyes.
For eyeliners, I really reccomend liquids for long days. If you don't like the sharp look of liquid eyeliners, you can tone it down a bit by putting a shadow of the same color over it and blending it out a little. If you must stick to pencil eyeliner, it has a similar consistency to creamy eyeshadows, so I would reccomend grabbing an angled brush and putting a small bit of eyeshadow over it, just to keep it from falling down your face. When putting eyeshadow over your bottom lid, make sure to clean up any pigments that fall off and go down your face.

Cheeks
For cheeks, I can only offer you the exact same solution that I offer with the eyeshadow. If you want a long lasting look, you have to wear a good liquid foundation. Its the best way to hold your makeup in place. Apply liquid foundation on your cheeks before putting down any blush or bronzer and it will last longer than if you go with just the pigment on your skin. Be very careful about touching your face when you are wearing any sort of blush or bronzer, because it may come off on your fingers and leave bare-er spots on your face.

Lips
Theres a simple trick I learned that I find makes lipstick stay on a very long time. Apply a coat of lipstick, and then with a cottom ball or tissue, dab off the excess lipstick, then apply another coat. Keep doing this until you get the full color you want, then top off with a lip gloss. When you do this, it has a similar effect to staining your lips. Going over it multiple times really helps to push the pigment in every crease in your lips.

I hope these simple tricks help you out in makeing your makeup last a long time. Til next time, peace out =).

Wear It: Saturday Morning Cartoons

Nostalgia is a fashion statement that will probably never go out of style. Some people reflect on the fashion of different decades, such as dressing like a 60s movie star or an 80s rocker. Many trends happening right now in 2011 are reflective on past styles, like high-waisted jeans, crop tops, or maxi dresses. Some clothing stores across the world have been licencing clothing to better reflect your own past, such as t-shirts that have a logo of your favorite cartoon that you watched every Saturday morning.
Face it, we all did it when we were younger, sat our butts in front of the tv and ate cereal Saturday mornings watching line-ups of all your favorite shows. It was cartoon prime time. If you're anything like me, maybe you still enjoy sitting in front of the TV with your favorite cereal watching cartoons. Wearing your favorite childhood show is a great way to show your personality, interests, and lets face it, its a fantastic conversation starter. Today, I'm going to show you a few places you can pick up your Saturday Morning Cartoon Merch to help represent and re-live your childhood.

The best place to start your search is probably your local hot topic, or, if you're like me and live no where near a hot topic, search their website! Underneath their "pop culture" tab, you can find a section called "Cartoon Retro". Here, you can find loads of clothing that represent your favorite cartoons. The best thing about the hot topic website is even though most of their stock is t-shirts, there also have jewelry, backpacks, shorts, plushies, hoodies, belts, etc. I'll just post a few of my favorite picks from whats in stock now:

Powerpuff Girls Shirt, $22.50 to $26.50
Powerpuff girls is a must for me. Its one of my favorite shows, I'm definitively buying this.

Pikachu Tank Top, $19.50 to $23.50.

Power Rangers T-shirt, $22.50 to $26.50

The next store I chose, D-Tox, I believe is only Canadian, and you cannot BUY online, but you can browse their designs and go to a local store (if you're in Canada) and pick some up. Like hot topic it features both male and female t-shirts. Here are some really awesome picks from their site.

Sesame Street, $25 (CAD)

Some companies still licence their own clothing and sell them on sites such as zazzle or amazon. One of these, my personal favorite of all the saturday morning cartoons, is garfield. Garfields zazzle is simply http://www.zazzle.com/garfield, and there is some pretty awesome merchandise there.
Womens Garfield Shoes $67.50

Trying out looks online!

About two years ago, a friend of mine linked me to a website that she likes to go on called Looklet. Its basically a dress up game, but with real clothes from stores and 37 different models to sport the clothes you want to check out. Its a very cool site for the fashionista type who really don't have enough money to constantly be buying clothes. The looks on this website are endless, and you can browse through other peoples looks and 'fave' them, or follow a person to keep up with what they're doing on Looklet.
If you guys check out the site, make sure to follow me XOMellieCoutre and check out my looks! Heres a sample of some of the looks I've personally made on that site.

If any of you decide to join looklet, post it in the comments and I'll follow you and check out what you've made!

Featured Site: Fred Flare

Toddland Mustache Wallet, fredflare.com. $28

When I first stumbled on fred flare 2 years ago, I was so amazed at the wild selection of clothing, accessories, and home decor they had. Today, I check their "What's New" page nearly every day because it still amazes me what I find on there.
The clothing they sell on there is stunning. Its where I had first heard of the 'boyfriend blazer'. They have a gorgeous selection of dresses, jackets, and they have funny mens and ladies tees.
Tropical Bliss Strapless Dress, fredflare.com. $64
The accessories on this website are my personal favorite part. They have a really awesome selection of Disney accessories that I haven't seen anywhere else. They also have funny wallets, broaches, and very cool sunglasses and necklaces. Honestly, just click on the links and check these things out yourself because I can't find the words to explain how awesome this site really is.
Disney Couture Drink Me Necklace, fredflare.com. $70

Inés Sunglasses, fredflare.com. $12
If you are in the New England area, they have a store, right now its in the progress of being moved to 300 Kingsland Ave in New York. If you ever have the chance I'd definitively recommend going there. I'm sure their in-store stock is just as quirky and fun as what they have online.

Color Crazy: Mint

Photos do not belong to me.

Greens are very summery colors, and mint is no exception. It is a very nice as an accent, or as a main body of color. Mint was quite popular in the 50s around the house, and in garnets. Today, it is making a huge come back in fashion by throwing itself into florals, accessories, and nail polishes. Heres a good guide on how to wear mint.
Colors to mix: Mints look great with light pinks, navys, corals, white and ivories, golds, and neutral shades. For a retro look, pair mint with other pastel shades. For a more modern look, try mixing mint with black.
Colors to avoid: avoid mixing mints with bright reds, bright oranges, and neon colors. also, try to stay away from silvers. Mint looks much better with golds in accessories.

Where to find mint?
Here are some of my personal favorite items online that has mint in them.

Striped Linen Blend Dress with Belt, Forever 21

Mind The Mint Wedge, Modcloth.com
URBANEARS Headphones
Art Deco Trudy Earrings
Mermaid Tears, OPI.

Celebrity Look: Taylor Swift

This basic black look was done last September for blender magazine. The basic black is something that is always in style. It was spiced up for these photos with some large bangles and beautiful black and white boots. I've located some similar pieces of clothing across the internet for anyone who wants to tackle a similar look to Taylor Swift in these pictures.

Hello internet world!
Today, I want to discuss the importance of balancing makeup. For an everyday look, this is fairly simple as people do not often wear a lot of makeup on a daily basis, but for evenings and special events, sometimes it is nice to spice things up and show off your most flattering features. This is fine, but do not try to show off all your features at once! Try to stick to one feature to stand out. In my post today, I will discuss how to put a bold look on your favorite feature without overdoing it.

Showing off lips

These pictures do not belong to me. They were found on the internet.

If you aren't sure if you should play up your lips or not, try it out once to see if you like it. Bold lips make a fantastic statement, as people tend to show their eyes off when doing an evening look. The first thing you want to figure out when attempting a bold lip is what color you would like to go for.
For people with pale skin: do not use colors that are too dark, instead, try colors that are very vibrant. Some good colors for pale skin are cherry reds, corals and bright pinks. Try staying away from darker colors such as purple, pure oranges, and deep reds.
For people who have mid skin tones: try mixture colors such as raspberry, mauve, or orangey red. You can also try playing with pure orange but be very careful what other makeup you mix pure orange with. With medium skin, i would avoid super light colors, as it would wash out your lips instead of making them look bolder.
For people who have dark skin: feel free to pick either bold or darker colors, as they generally tend to look good on darker skins. Bold reds in any shade tend to look fantastic next to darker skin, along with bright pinks, and deeper purples. Like with mid-tones, i would avoid lighter colors, as it may wash your lips out.
Some final tips: When wearing bold lips, try to keep your eye shadows in natural colors, and apply eyeliners and mascaras lightly or skip them completely. For your cheeks, go with something matte, with little or no shimmer, and try do not use vibrant blushes. Often times, bold lips do not work out too well with chapped lips, so make sure you use lots of chapstick on your lips on a regular basis to prevent that from happening. Make sure you take your color with you when going out, as you may need to reapply it after eating or drinking. To keep your lipstick off your teeth, after applying, pucker your mouth into an 'o' shape and stick your finger in and pull it out, it should get rid of any lipstick that may end up on your teeth. If you have redness to your skin tone from blemishes, burn or skin conditions, try to avoid reds lipstick, as it tends to make the redness of your skin stand out. Finally, do not be afraid to mix lipsticks to find that perfect color for you. Though there are millions of colors in lipsticks, it may not be easy to find that perfect match, so you can mix things up to help find the color you are looking for.

Showing off eyes
These pictures are not mine. They were found on the internet.

Even though I personally believe any color can be worn by any eye if done so correctly, there are certain colors that make certain eyes pop. No matter what your eye color is, more than likely golds and purples and neutrals will suit your eyes. Those colors are fairly universal shades. If you are unsure how to apply your eye shadow, there are three easy steps to a basic smokey eye. One, take your lightest color and a fairly thick brush, and apply it all over the lid. Two, with your medium color and a smaller brush, start on the outer corner of your eye, and follow your crease 3/4 of the way to the inner corner of the eye. Go over this a few times to help blend it out, and if needed, clean your brush and blend it without color on it. Three, take your darkest color and a very light brush, apply a small amount of eye shadow to the outer corner of your eye. Clean your brush and blend the darker color into the medium color.
For blue eyes: Blue eyes really pop with whites, pinks, light blues and greens, and orange shades, which contrast blue eyes. This does not mean you cannot wear other colors.
For green eyes: Golds and deep purples work fantastically on your eyes. Being a green-eyed girl myself, I also really like matte yellows on my eye lids. Greens perfect contrast is pink, so darker pink looks great in your crease. This doesn't mean you cannot wear other colors.
For hazel eyes: Natural colors really make hazel eyes pop, along with yellow and gold colors. Eye shadows with a good shimmer really bring attention to hazel eyes. As I said before, this does NOT mean you can't wear other colors.
For brown eyes: greyscale colors (including white and black) do a lot for brown eyes. Dramatic white lids with grey and black creases make brown eyes pop. Other colors that look fantastic on brown eyes are browns and many shades of purple and silver.
Some final tips: When going for a dramatic eye, do not be afraid to put on mascara or beautiful fake lashes. Remember to put some of your darkest color on your lower lashes, but not too much. Wear an eye shadow base or foundation under your shadow to avoid it clumping up in the crease. If you are an eyeliner fanatic like myself, cat-eye liner make your eyes look longer. Make sure to highlight your browbone with a neutral color, slightly lighter than your own skin tone. It will draw attention to your eye area. If you have a naturally bolder lip color, try putting a bit of concealer or a light gloss over your lips to tone it down.

Showing off cheeks
These pictures do not belong to me. They were found on the internet.

If you are going for a bold cheek, you have to take into consideration the tone of your skin, cool or warm. To find out, try to find a vein in your arm. If it is blue, you have a cooler skintone. If it is green, you have a warmer skintone. Depending on your skintone, there are certain blushes that will look better on you and really make your cheekbones stand out.
For cooler skin: use pinks. Pink blushes look much more natural on cool skin than bronze colors. Try to stay away from browns. Some coral colors may work, but be careful when using it.
For warmer skin: use bronze. Any tan shade will look great as long as it is applied properly. Corals look good on warmer skin as well.
Some final tips: When using bold blush, try to play down the eyes and lips by sticking to not-so bright colors that look naturally great on your eyes (such as the ones listed above). For the lips, try to look natural. Bold lips and bold cheeks really contrast each other, and it just ends up looking like you are wearing way too much makeup. When applying your blush, smile, and apply to the apples of your cheeks, then bring the access back towards your jaw. Apply your blush slightly under your the top part of your cheek bone for the most dramatic effect. Even though you are going for a bold look on your cheeks, still, do not apply a whole lot. A little goes a long way with blush. Applying blush with a stipple brush gives a very nice even coat of blush, without putting too much on. Do not concentrate your blush on a very tiny area, make sure it flows fairly big across your cheek to avoid looking like a doll.

Now take a look in the mirror, pick out your favorite feature on yourself, and play around with some makeup looks. It is always a good idea to practice what you want to do with your makeup instead of putting it on twenty minutes before you go out on the town, as you may find the colors you wanted to wear aren't as flattering as you thought. After, make sure to fully remove your makeup to keep your complexion fresh and your skin healthy.
